FORT RAIGAD

Introduction : Fort Raigad popularly known as the "Gibraltar of the East" is the Capital Fort of Chhatrapati Shivajiraje Bhosale. Earlier known as Rairi, Tanas, Rasivata, Nandadeep, it was named "Raigad" by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort was under construction for 14 long years under the able guidance of Hiraji Indalkar - the architect of this fort. Approx 300 buildings were built during that time, today we can see the ruins of the same.
Shivaji Raja was coronated as "Chhatrapati" on the very fort on 06th June 1674 (Jyestha Shuddha Trayodashi) and even today we celebrate the coronation ceremony with great pomp and show on the Fort. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj died on the same fort in 1680.
The Fort was destroyed by the English in 1818 and today we see the ruins of the Fort. 

What to See on the Fort?? Hirkani Buruj, Mena Darwaja, Rani Mahal, Sachivalay, Palkhi Darwaja, Raj Mahal, Sadar(Diwane Khas), Raj Darbar, Kushawarta, Holicha Maal, Shirkai, Hati Talav, Bajar Peth, Takmak Tok, Jagdishwar Mandir, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Samadhi, Bhavani Tok, Daru Kothar.

Why should you visit the Fort?? It is not for picnic or a source of timepass. The Fort should be visited only by those who have a quest to learn something from it. The Fort is a living example which in itself speaks about the great king, the history, architecture and also gives an amazing view of the Sahyadri Ranges.. Nature lovers, photographers, trekkers, MBA students, school students, college students, knowledge seekers should visit the Fort.

ALCOHOL IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED ON THE FORT AND ANYONE FOUND WITH THE SAME SHALL BE PUNISHED STRONGLY.

Where to Stay?? Decent accommodation is available on the Fort at Jog or MTDC. For Zilla Parishad accommodation, you have to contact the Mahaad Office for the same. So also, trekkers can stay at Bapu or Shinde Maushi's house.

Food?? Available at decent fare at MTDC canteen, Jog, Deshmukh (Near Shirkai Mandir) and the Dhangar families..
